General Discussion

This group is a space for general discussions about the Map Shanty project.

Big Sound Map

We had visitors map how loud they thought their neighborhoods were and then Lesley and Tony put it in this awesome map.

Map Shanty Mix CD

Hey Everyone,

So I've been having a lot of geographical moments in the past few days, some of which have occurred while I was listening to my music collection. These have inspired me to compile a Mapping Shanty Mix CD. This is something we could play in the shanty if we want to bring our battery-operated speakers or boom boxes along, or just something to remember the shanty experience by.

In the spirit of collaboration, I'd love if everyone could help! So, I'm asking each of you to:

Sound map

I guess this was better in person than in a photo. Shanty visitors (and some shanty folk, too) recorded sound clips from different shanties on those funny little silver recorders. Highlights include some pretty "great" singing from Norae and some actually great music from Black Box as well as a dramatic "Terror! Terror! Terror on the High Seas!!" from Nemo.

Map Shanty on Video

We had a wonderful opening weekend. Here is a video made by Matt at TCAS that shows the Map Shanty.

At the Shanty

I have made a "At the Shanty" content type. It will be under Create Content for you. It is for posting a story about an experience at the shanty and pictures if you want. It will show up on the front page (as a link on the right bar, and a group of images in the main area).

Shantytown Map

The online map of shantytown looks really really great. Thank you so much for putting this together. BUT where is the Map Shanty? We gotta make it onto our own map, man!

Here is the map we made, printed and passed out to people on the ice. (the GPS-less version) We also (attempted) to use it in a mapping activity on Saturday.

Feel free to make copies and distribute. (I resized and exported to jpg, so I'm assuming it'll print okay, but let me know if you have problems or if the resolution is poor and I can get you a higher quality version!)

sound mapping ideas

1) i got some tiny/chintzy recorders that i was thinking we could use to record the sound in each shanty and then have them displayed in our shanty(either in relation to a map, or some other way).

2) use the sounds of the shanty town to determine a walking route which is then mapped on paper or indicated outside by flags (or something)

3) chart the decibel levels inside our shanty and possibly other places

4) have a map on which people can draw/indicate favorite or important sounds in their life...maybe an overlay on the big Hudson map like transportation was thinking of?

Materials for Saturday

lets make a list of materials for Saturday. I'll pick them on Friday.

So far we know:
sketch books
pencils
compass
...

Send ideas for the EXCO Newsletter

I'm writing a short article for the EXCO January newsletter. Please send me quotes and ideas to include by the end of the week! Send to crecknagel@gmail.com

I checked with the other organizers on Monday about getting some money to cover our over-budget costs, and they said we might be able to get some funds from next semester's budget (this semester's money has already been allocated). No guarantees, but I'll check into it further and get back to you.

Also, check out excotc.org, the new classes for next semester are posted now and there are some really cool ones!

UTM to Lat Long

I think we'll need this conversion when we use GPS on Friday.
Send a message if you're coming or need a ride.

Great Work! Now Let's Play

Hi all,

Now that our shanty is all built and I can stop worrying about some construction disaster, I'm getting excited about hanging out at the shanty!

Do we have a plan for who will staff the shanty when? Can we use the google calendar to sign up? (I haven't used google calendars much so I don't know how they work.) I would like to work this weekend ("Transportation"
weekend). I will, however, need a ride ... so can I team up with someone with a car?

What needs to be done to prepare? I have some ideas and if someone wants to chat about this first weekend, let me know.

Aerial Photos of Medicine Lake

On my return from Chicago last month I snapped a shot of Medicine Lake and downtown Minneapolis. They didn't come out that great, but still kind of neat. Also, if you don't know Teton, he is really cute and has nothing to do with mapping or Medicine Lake, except that he was with the same set of pictures.

Shanty Assembly on Ice

This is some shots of the shanty being assembled on the icy shores of Medicine Lake.

There is also a panoramic I took of the shanties being built here: http://mapshanty.com/panoramic/shanty-assembly-shore
