sound mapping ideas
1) i got some tiny/chintzy recorders that i was thinking we could use to record the sound in each shanty and then have them displayed in our shanty(either in relation to a map, or some other way).
2) use the sounds of the shanty town to determine a walking route which is then mapped on paper or indicated outside by flags (or something)
3) chart the decibel levels inside our shanty and possibly other places
4) have a map on which people can draw/indicate favorite or important sounds in their life...maybe an overlay on the big Hudson map like transportation was thinking of?
5) in the books or as a small project do something like this
6) there are lots of online sound maps which are recordings linked to places, can we integrate any of this technology with the shanty, or glean ideas from them? here's one example
7) this is rad!

hello everyone! these all look awesome, especially the soundmapper. i would love to help with it, though i have no experience with javascript.
in other news, my friend dudley studies soundscapes in the geography department at the u, and i told him about this, and he is interested in participating.

One idea might be to experiment with the resonances of each structure. Every sound wave has a length from crest to crest. If that length matches the length of a room, the wave will get "caught" or trapped, resulting in strange vibrations and warping. My guess based on the size of the shanties is that it would take a very loooow sound to accomplish that. However, the structures have their own acoustics in general... Could be fun to perform the same sound in each shanty and outdoors and see what happens (while recording, of course).
This explains it more scientifically than I ever could:
