Supply List

Per Andrea, below is a list of materials that we are looking into for the construction. This is not comprehensive! If you have a connection for free or cheap supplies, please let us know!

-- 2x4s or 2x6s to create a frame structure. These can be recycled from other set pieces.

-- Any sort of plywood, masonite, mdf or other material that could be used as a sheeting surface for interior or exterior walls.

-- insulation foam (because my goal is to keep my tongue from going numb from cold)

-- plexiglass or other suitable material for windows.

-- Benches for interior and/or exterior seating

-- Corrugated plastic or metal for roofing material (like they use on barns, you know?)

-- Paint

-- Adhesive Paste (for applying maps to walls)

-- maps

-- corkboard

-- platforms for floor surface

    From Jesse:

What size of windows would we want? Smaller or larger?

Are we going to use carpet for the floor? Ceiling? Walls? Might in the least give the impression of warmth?!

i do love the idea of carpet. we tried it last year. the problem was twofold: 1. it got bunched up- even though we nailed it down- from people constantly treading their boots across it; 2. it got nasty and frozen from the snow and melt.
That said, i still like the idea of carpet, and think we might think through the best way to fasten one down, and minimize foot traffic on it. seems way more homey than wood floors. ick. cold.

i stopped by the free map pile at the University of Minnesota Map Library and picked up a dozen or so colorful older maps. I was imagining a sort of wall collage with maps and paper mache glue, so they are flattened and stuck together as a sort of wall paper. I'll bring them in tomorrow as an example. There are many more where they came from, too.

Here's are some additions from the list we generated at our second meeting (this includes all supplies/costs for activities too):

    tables on wheels
    hardware
    snow shovel
natural dye to map foot traffic?
    tacks for corkboard
    chalkboard paint
    propane tank/propane/heating unit

    modeling clay
sticker dots for survey (will they stick?)
    small activity booklets
    paper (big and small)
writing utensils (pencils, sharpeners, erasers, colored pencils, crayons)
    rulers, drawing compasses
    printing costs

    compasses
    telescope
    GPS units?
    audio recorders/headphones/playback devices

what if we used some cheap rugs instead of carpeting the whole thing? I think IKEA has some for $2. i agree we should make it as homey and colorful as possible!

I have access to some windows depending on what size we need. Also what about reusing stuff others have thrown away such as carpets or rugs. We could always thrift it and create less waste.
